You are important
What you say and do matters!
It might be easy to fall into the trap of feeling unimportant yet every action you take has an impact on the world. Everything you say and do matters. You are important!
We live in a world that is based on individualism, a world that places certain individuals on pedestals and honours them like Gods. Ever since the creation of the “star” system in the early 20th Century, certain individuals have been catapulted to positions of power. Even now, people of “influence” with huge followings, literally influence life. But does that mean that if you have zero followers, haven’t had your 5 minutes of fame, or aren’t a billionaire that your actions don’t matter? Of course not! What you do or say in your life matters. Every action you take matters. You are valuable to the world. You are important!
The Butterfly Effect
It is undeniable that everything we do, makes a difference. It’s called ‘The Butterfly Effect’ and what it implies is that small actions, seemingly insignificant even, can initiate a sequence of events that eventually have a significant impact.
There is a butterfly effect in everything we do (or don’t do). A simple smile to a stranger passing by might be enough to encourage that person to ask that girl out. Letting someone in during a traffic jam might mean that person returns home in a calm manner rather than angry and turning to alcohol. We have all seen in the course of the last few years how a handful of people not turning up to vote and have their say has shifted the course of politics forever. Every action and word we utter matters. It doesn’t matter if you have 1 follower, 10 million or 0, you are important.
Although we have no idea exactly how our actions might play out in the long run, it is worth consciously deciding how we chose to show up in the world. Yes we can fall trap to the storyline that we are not important and therefore it doesn’t matter what we do, or we can value ourselves enough to want to make the world a better place.
The social media trap
It’s insane that a single square posted by a few “influencers” can set off an entire Global Movement, sell a product, or sell an idea. It’s also insane that a billionaire can simply buy an island. Perhaps this is one reason why we have such high mental health numbers, it’s hard to feel seen, heard, important when we are not one of those individuals sitting on a throne. Yet it is not all cruisy for those living in the spot light either.
Living in the spotlight opens up a huge door of mass public judgement. We never know what someone else is going through, no matter how public their lives might be. We can’t see the invisible demons they might be fighting. This makes our small actions even more important. We could all cultivate a little more compassion and empathy for one another. We could also let go of judging ourselves, and in doing so, judge others less!
Feeling powerless in the current climate of the world? I completely understand! How can we feel anything but when we are living in such tumultuous and uncertain times. Sometimes I think, ‘why even bother writing?’ but then I think about the possibility that writing this might have on one single soul. Perhaps one single soul will read this and it will shift their life for the better. Then it’s totally worth it!
We never know what impact we might have on others. Yet we have the choice in every moment to make a difference.
Ideas to build your self worth and make a difference
1. Treat yourself and others kindly.
2. Put yourself first so you can help others. Putting yourself first sometimes is not selfish, it just means you are better equiped to help others.
3. Choose to love yourself so you can love others.
Let go of the idea that your job, bank account, house, or social media account defines your worth. You don’t realise just what an impact you are already making on the world. If there is something you have been wanting to do but haven’t started because you feel you are not worthy, start it now. If not you, who then? Now, it’s your choice to decide what impact you want to have. You are important!
“You will not always be able to solve all of the world’s problems at once, but don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have. History has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.”
